Today I happened upon a copy of the New York Daily News, a paper I rarely read. Yet as per the mysterious world in which we live where things have a purpose, in my reading of the paper on this day, I had a complete identification with a story written by famed sportswriter Mike Lupica. But this story was not on the next to last page of the paper, where sports stories would be placed, the story was on the second page of the paper, the place where news stories of substance are placed. This story was a comment, rather personal in its view, about the loss of Karl Rove to this administration and the country. His last comment summed up the entire story. He concluded that
America and Americans will be a better place each day he is not involved in the administration. However, he also gave the impression that maybe he knew something about the timing of his resignation, and that Rove may be taking a short vacation before he announces that he is moving on to the Giuliani campaign. Never before can I report that I have felt so akin to a news story. Mike, you are the man. I have admired your insights in the world of sport and now you have my feelings to a tee in your thoughts of the damage that this administration has created in the respect the world has toward
America as well as the real damage to our individual and national finances.
The question now is how quickly can we turn this ship around. The departure of Karl Rove is not seen as a step in that direction. As our President now has the sense, without the need for his handlers to support his psyche anymore, that he is in charge and untouchable. History will tell the story, but this President will always see himself as having done nothing but good for
America and the World. Too bad for us all. But it also means that times will get better. Remember that famous quote from that philosopher group we all heard of…”It’s getting better all the time.”
