Between 1840 and 1980 every President elected in the score year (a year divided by 20) has died in office. Some may say Ronald Reagan didn’t die, but he was a victim of an assasination attempt which he survived. Maybe he died but he forgot. Maybe that was uncalled for humor. But now we have a President, elected in a score year, who seems invincible. He had surrounded himself with cronies and supporters who would not let anything happen to him. During debates they whispered answers into his ear. They made policy decisions which have changed Human History. They created a war, alienated the world from the American government, and added to partisan political rhetoric until the pendulum turned against them so badly that support for the administration wilted and now there is no more partisan rancor. The government is just shut down since the Democrats cannot accomplish anything without the President and the President will not allow the Democrats to do anything that might change the course of our world’s path. But during his years in office since the election of 2000, President Bush has survived both physically and politically because, in large part, of his circle around him. But that circle has been trimmed down. The retirement of Karl Rove leaves only Condeleeza Rice and Vice President Cheney as the protectors of the cause. So with just a year and a half to go, will there be something that happens that is larger than George Bush, something that just shows that American History does repeat itself. Will Bush’s term end on January 20, 2009 or will it end sooner. We know that the Democrats will not and cannot create any kind of legal manueverings that will shorten his presidency. So that means that we are only talking about the death of the President. In that regard we are fortunate that Dick Cheney is still in the mix. There is always the possibility of a hunting accident if the two went out one day together. But with all the hurt that people have suffered because of decisions made in the past 6 and a half years, one would think that there would be fanatics espousing death to the President. American society is still rather violent so I don’t understand how that is not something we hear about. But unless the historic pattern repeats we are going to see President Bush politely hand the gavel of power to the next President at his (or her) inauguration. AHHH, that brings up the next point. Maybe the world will be in such a crisis by that time, that George will not yield the Presidency, saying that there cannot be a change in course at this time, and that he will remain on until his job is done. Oh, but I digress, because this story is not about the President staying in office, it is about the historic sentiment that he be removed from office before his tenure is supposed to end. And so we wait for history to repeat itself, or we start writing about medical science that saved Reagan and political science that saved Bush. But with more than 500 days until his office expires, there is still time for history to reach out and re-create itself. And so we law abiding citizens sit and wait it out. One way or another we will have a new President in less than a year and a half. Don’t blink, you’ll miss the fun of the rest of his administration.

1You can find a great summary video of the current administrations “accomplishments” on the Shadow Candidate Blog.
